The story:

You'll see a family go crazy over the disappearance of a young girl, deal with grief and anger as they slowly uncover the truth, and try to move on, knowing that there is nothing they can do to bring back Susie.


03. The Time Traveler's Wife

The story:
Henry DeTamble is quite unique - he is diagnosed with the chrono-displacement disorder. That means he is capable of time travel, although it is not something he can control. He just disappears and finds himself in the past or in the future. He married the love of his life - Clare - and both attempt to live a normal life. Unfortunately, Henry's condition is making it quite impossible for them.

Why you'll cry:
You'll see how the couple will struggle to maintain a normal life and fail. Plus, you'll know the worries that never leaves Clare's mind and hope that these apprehensions will never turn into realities.


04. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

The story:
As Lord Voldemort rises to power, he begins the war against the wizards who oppose his reign. Harry and his friends find a way to finally defeat the dark wizard - deciphering clues, figuring out the best strategies, and risking their lives to save the wizarding world.

This book is the thrilling conclusion to the well-loved Harry Potter series. As you read along, you'll see several characters perform acts of courage and sacrifice their lives to help Harry complete his mission. Their unexpected deaths will tear your hearts to pieces.



05. Me Before You


Author: Jojo Moyes

The story:
Will Traynor is an extremely adventurous man who loves traveling, working hard, and exploring. When he gets caught in an accident and becomes paralyzed, he loses all interest in life and tells his family that he wants to end his life. He is introduced to Louisa, a jolly young woman who is paid by his family to take care of Will and make him see that life is still worth living, even if he is stuck in a wheelchair.

06. After You

The story:
After You is the sequel to Me Before You. It follows Louisa, as she deals with Will's decision of ending his life. Will leaves her a huge amount of money - enough to start a life of her own in the city of her choosing. But, Lou cannot seem to shake off the guilt she is feeling and cannot seem to move on from the fact that she has lost the man she loved.

You'll see Louisa attempt to move on and live with loss, grief, and guilt.


07. Looking for Alaska


Author: John Green
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary

The story:
Alaska Young is a beautiful and mysterious girl that Pudge befriends, and eventually, falls in love with. He thinks he knows Alaska very well until she slips off in the middle of the night and is found dead in the middle of the road.

Why you'll cry:
You'll realize that the only time you will miss someone is when they are gone forever.


08. The Fault in Our Stars


Author: John Green
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary

The story:
Two young cancer patients fall in love and try to lead very normal lives. However, this is very challenging for them - especially with the frequent hospital trips, several sick days, and the tank that Hazel Grace needs to carry around all the time. But, despite the odds, they take trips to interesting places, make friends, and learn more about each other and themselves as they fall deeper in love.

Why you'll cry:
You'll realize that death is inevitable, and when the love of your life leaves, there is nothing to do but accept and know that their suffering is over.


09. Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl


Author: Anne Frank
Genre: Nonfiction, Classic

The story:
When she was 13 years old, Anne Frank and her family went into hiding to avoid being captured and killed by the Nazis. She documents her thoughts and her family's activities during the dull days they spent in the secret attic. She writes her dreams and plans after the war and is eagerly awaiting the day when they get to lead normal lives again.

Why you'll cry:
You'll see a family suffering because of hate. Ultimately, you'll see the hopes and dreams of a little girl die because of a war that she can do nothing about.


10. If I Stay


Author: Gayle Forman
Genre: Young Adult, Romance

The story:
One winter morning, Mia Hall and her family go out on a drive. They get caught in an accident - killing her entire family and leaving her half-alive. Her spirit sees her body and is left with a decision - to go into the light and move on, or to go back into her body and live without her family.

Why you'll cry:
You'll see loved ones cheer on Mia Hall and encourage her to fight for her life, even though they weren't sure if she would survive.

  2. I stopped reading the Lovely Bones at the very beginning! I got emotional. Reading, watching, and or hearing about the death of a child takes me over the top!

  4. LOVE THIS LIST!! A Fault in our stars made me bawl....I actually read it with my teenage son and he cried too! And of course, Deathly Hallows...how do you not cry with Snape? I haven't been brave enough to read The Lovely Bones though. Maybe I"ll try it!
